3-Axis Milling: Large Formats, Precise Geometries

For base plates, machine beds, fixtures, and anything else that requires a large working surface: With travel ranges of up to 2,600 × 750 × 800 mm, we can machine even large components in a single setup. Contours, pockets, grooves, drill patterns, and threaded holes are produced with precision and repeatability—even in small-batch production.

5-axis simultaneous machining: complex geometries, fewer setups

In 5-axis simultaneous milling, the tool and workpiece move simultaneously along five axes. This allows for free-form surfaces, undercuts, and angular components that would require multiple setups in 3-axis machining—with each setup, the tolerance chain would increase. Fewer setups mean higher accuracy, shorter cycle times, and lower costs for complex parts.

What is the maximum component size that RK-tec can mill?

We machine parts up to 2,600 × 750 × 800 mm using 3-axis machining, and up to 700 × 700 × 700 mm using 5-axis simultaneous machining. Larger welded structures weighing up to 3,000 kg are fabricated in our in-house welding shop and then machined.

When is 5-axis milling a better choice than 3-axis?

As soon as a component requires multiple setups in three axes: Each setup change costs time and accuracy. Free-form surfaces, undercuts, and machining from multiple directions can be accomplished in a single setup using 5-axis machining—with greater precision and, for complex parts, usually at a lower cost as well.

Does RK-tec also mill individual parts based on customer drawings?

Yes—we’re just as happy to handle individual parts as we are to handle production runs. Please send the drawing preferably in SLDPRT, STEP, IGES, DXF, or DWG format; our CAD/CAM programming team will process the data directly.

What materials are milled?

Aluminum, steel, stainless steel, tool steel, special-purpose steel, and plastics. If you have questions about exotic materials, just ask—we’ll give you an honest answer about what’s possible and what isn’t.

How does RK-tec manufacture products cost-effectively in series production?

About automation: The 3-axis machining center is loaded by a robot, while the 5-axis machining center is loaded via an integrated loading gantry—both can also operate unmanned. This allows us to combine production-run pricing with the flexibility to accommodate changes.

What tolerances are possible?

We manufacture all materials with tolerances of less than 0.05 mm

Can I also get the finished assembly instead of individual milled parts?

Yes—that’s our standard for precision manufacturing: milled, welded, assembled, laser-marked, and documented. You install instead of coordinating.
